After two strong seasons in the global FIH Pro League, winning the Commonwealth Games gold in 2018 and the Oceania Cup in 2019, both verses arch-rivals Australia, the Black Sticks women have cemented their place in the top 5 world rankings. With world class players like Gemma McCaw and Kayla Whitelock coming back, joining star players like Stacey Michelsen, Sam Charlton and Rose Keddell, the teams’ chances to succeed in Tokyo look promising.
The Black Sticks Men, have forged an enviable international reputation as very tough opposition. With a world ranking of 8, the Kiwis won silver on the Gold Coast in 2018, battled through a challenging FIH Pro League in 2019, but with the return from a prolonged injury layoff of Simon Child, the team defeated both Japan and Korea at home last November, to qualify for Tokyo. Defeating reigning Olympic champions Argentina in March, means this team is tracking well toward 2021.
Ford is proud to continue their relationship with both Black Stick teams as well as Hockey New Zealand and continue the naming rights support for the annual Ford National Hockey Championship, where long standing rivalries are played out on the turf as well as with fans in the stands, in New Zealand’s premier inter-provincial hockey championship.
The sponsorship also sees Ford support New Zealand's next generation of hockey players through the Small Sticks programme - Hockey New Zealand's junior programme which is currently sees more than 70,000 primary school children each year get a taste for hockey in their local communities.
