How long does it take for my remote command to communicate from FordPass®* to my Ford?
Remote commands use the Internet connection to relay the desired action to be performed by your vehicle. Generally, remote commands execute within 10 - 15 seconds. However, the FordPass remote commands are not instant, as your phone does not speak directly to your vehicle.
The Path for Commands is as Follows:
- A command gets sent from your device, through the carrier network and is routed to be received by the Ford Cloud.
- Ford Cloud communicates with the vehicle (via the carrier network) to make checks to ensure all conditions are met for the remote command to take place.
- This is part of a global safety and security policy for all vehicles.
- Unlike other smart devices, the global security and safety protocols for vehicles are more extensive and thorough as they implement data privacy and security checks.
- The vehicle makes those checks, then reports back to the Ford Cloud.
Note: If the conditions are met, the Ford Cloud instructs the vehicle to perform the command.
- The vehicle reports back to the cloud that the command was performed which in turn the cloud reports back to the phone with a successful message. If conditions are not met at any stage, an error message is reported back to the phone.
Notes:
- All interactions go through the cell network towers and the latency or delays are much more noticeable when compared to smart devices in a home network.
- Each check takes time. The total time depends on signal strength, vehicle location, and the following:
-
- Physical Distance - The Ford Cloud is hosted at Ford Headquarters in North America. Several network devices are traveled to establish the connection (and back again). Phone to Ford to Vehicle to Ford and then back to Phone.
- Bandwidth - If the network is not configured optimally or if you are in an area of high use this can add latency as traffic piles up.
