Where can I find Ford Electric Vehicle (EV) charging and plug type safety information?
As an Electric Vehicle owner, you have many options for charging your vehicle, at home or on the go. When charging your EV, be sure to follow the guidelines below. Failure to do can result in improper charging, overstay fees or damage to your vehicle.
Charging and Plug General Information
Charge Plug Types Adapters and Safety
- The Ford standard plug type is Type-2 (Mennekes).
- You can use any plug type to charge your EV, as long as you have the correct adapter.
- You are responsible for reaching out to the respective manufacturer(s) for assistance in cases of adapter issues.
- You should not use extension cables when charging. These cables might not safely handle the power output and may cause electrical shortages, fire or damage to your EV.
Avoiding Overstay Fees
- You should always verify that you are using the correct plug type.
- Just because a charger fits your port does not mean it is correct.
- For example, Type-2 can fit into a DC Fast charge socket, but it cannot access the higher current that makes fast charge possible.
- Your vehicle will limit the charging capabilities of the charge station when the wrong plug is used. This can cause extended charge times, as well as overstay fees on the your account.
Securing a Charge Cable
- Charge Station cables lock in place when in use.
- This gives you the ability to leave your vehicle unattended while charging.
- EVs also have plug lock protocols built in that require a key fob to be present, and your vehicle must be unlocked before the charging cord can be released.
Charge Port LED Indicators
If you do not see LED indicator lights when your EV is charging, you may need to enable the feature in your in-vehicle settings. For more information, please review your owner's manual.
- The EV's charge port lights up when charging.
- Blue indicates the vehicle is charging, as well as the current charge level.
- The charge level is split up into four LED sections.
- The sections represent:
- 80-100%
- 60-80%
- 40-60%
- 20-40%
- Orange indicates the plug was inserted incorrectly, and the EV is not charging.
