The embedded modem is unable to be retrofitted. Although this means you won’t be able to access some of the features within the FordPass app, like remote start, remote lock and unlock and live traffic, you can still take advantage of accessing your vehicles health alerts and service history.
No. FordPass is an opt-in system that, should the customer not wish to use its functionality, they can choose not to. It has no effect on their vehicle otherwise.
All FordPass Connect related services will be included in the customer’s purchase price of their connected Ford vehicle. This includes unlimited Command and Control (defined as Remote Start and Stop, Remote Lock and Unlock, Vehicle Locator, Vehicle Status, and Vehicle Health Alerts, with the exception of Live Traffic), and a 3 year Live Traffic subscription. The FordPass app is free to download from the Apple and Google stores respectively.
There are no additional costs for the customer to access the FordPass data used by the embedded modem. Using a global SIM enables FordPass to access all both of New Zealand’s cellular phone networks, ensuring customers have the best possible coverage and functionality.
No. Services may vary depending on model variant. Most notably, remote start is not accessible on manual transmission vehicles, however you can use the other FordPass Connect Remote Features via the FordPass App such as Remote Lock and Unlock, Vehicle Status, Vehicle Health and Alerts etc
If you are the first owner, your modem came in a partially activated state. If you are not the first owner, it may be in one of three states – fully activated, partially activated or de-activated.
An in-vehicle Master Reset will reset both SYNC and modem to factory settings.
For the modem:
For the SYNC system:
Completing this process is particularly important if you are not the first owner. Likewise, please don’t forget to do a Master Reset if you ever sell your vehicle. It is much like wiping your smart phone memory when you upgrade to a new device.
Master Reset Instructions: To perform: - Sitting in the car, turn the vehicle on and in SYNC select Settings, select General, select Reset, and select Master Reset. when prompted with a confirmation, select Continue.
For additional details please refer to - Ford New Zealand Connected Vehicles Terms & Privacy.
A Ford ‘Connected Vehicle’ contains an embedded modem which is in a partially activated state and is sending vehicle diagnostic and maintenance data, the electronic serial number of the embedded modem, the SIM serial number and the vehicle identification number to Ford’s parent company, Ford Motor Company, and to cloud service providers based in the USA. This data is collected for the purpose of quality assurance, product improvement and product research and may be disclosed to Ford and Ford’s related companies.
For additional details please refer to - Ford New Zealand Connected Vehicles Terms & Privacy.
Your Connected Vehicle contains an embedded modem which is sending vehicle diagnostic data to Ford ; If you wish to de-activate the modem or return it to a partially activated state, follow either of these instructions.

For additional details please refer to - Ford New Zealand Connected Vehicles Terms & Privacy.
Prior to selling or at any time you wish to remove users from accessing your Ford via their FordPass account, a Master Reset of SYNC connectivity is required.
Master Reset Instructions: To perform: - Sitting in the car, turn the vehicle on and in SYNC select Settings, select General, select Reset, and select Master Reset, when prompted with a confirmation, select Continue.
The Master Reset is now complete. All previously authorised users will receive a ‘Vehicle Access Removed’ notification in their FordPass App account and will no longer be able to access the vehicle.
For the modem, this means returning it to a partially activated state. This will delete all authorised users, removing access to the Connected Vehicle via any linked FordPass account.
For the SYNC system, this means erasing all mobile phone data (such as address books) imported from smart phones that had been previously linked to your vehicle via Bluetooth.
For additional details please refer to - Ford New Zealand Connected Vehicles Terms & Privacy.
A connected vehicle contains a FordPass Connect embedded modem. This is a cellular modem containing a SIM card which enables the vehicle to connect to the internet. Like other parts of a vehicle, it is fitted at the factory. The vehicle’s modem in its factory setting is in a ‘partially activated’ state. This means it is transmitting vehicle diagnostic data to Ford.
To make full use of the vehicle modem, you need to download the FordPass App, create an account and, similar to the concept of Bluetooth pairing, link the two together to create a ‘fully activated’ vehicle. If you are not the first owner, we recommend that you contact Ford to let us know you are the new owner of your vehicle and we recommend you Master Reset your vehicle, as described in another FAQ.
Once fully activated, a range of services such as Remote Start and Lock, Unlock will be available to you. This is a rapidly changing area of vehicle technology with features and connected services added or updated frequently (for example, over-the-air updates). For a full explanation and access to these services, download the FordPass App.
For additional details please refer to - Ford New Zealand Connected Vehicles Terms & Privacy.

Data sent comprises vehicle diagnostic data (including vehicle diagnostic trouble codes when detected), vehicle maintenance data (such as fuel and fluid levels, engine temperature and odometer information), the electronic serial number of your FordPass Connect modem (ESN), the SIM serial number (ICCID) and the vehicle identification number (VIN).
The data sent by your vehicle in this partially activated state is collected for the purpose of product improvement, research and development. Our engineers really value this.
We also use this information when providing services to you such as timely service reminders, vehicle servicing and vehicle health alerts, and it also enables over the air (OTA) updates to refresh in-vehicle modem software.
For additional details please refer to - Ford New Zealand Connected Vehicles Terms & Privacy.
Over-the-air (OTA) software update enables Ford to update a vehicle’s software platforms, to keep the vehicle up-to-date with new features and improvements, which can include:
The Modem must be in an Activated state to enable OTA to proceed.
Refer to FAQ - Why Should I leave the Modem in “Partially Activated” State?
