What are Ford Software Updates?
Just like a smartphone, you can keep your Ford performing at its peak with routine updates with the help of Ford software updates. Ford software updates help ensure your SYNC® 4 and SYNC 4A-equipped vehicle receives the latest software and feature updates. These improvements include:
- SYNC updates
- Feature upgrades
- Security enhancements
- System fixes
Where Automatic Updates is set to ‘On’ in your vehicle, you agree that Ford, our affiliates and/or service providers may remotely check and deliver software updates, upgrades, supplements, or changes without any further notice or additional consent from you. For SYNC4 and SYNC 4A equipped Connected Vehicles, software updates can be delivered over-the-air to in-vehicle systems including certain vehicle modules, SYNC and modem modules. These updates may include vehicle enhancements and updates to improve vehicle quality, vehicle capability and to add vehicle features or software security updates.
Where Automatic Updates is set to ‘Off’ in your vehicle, it can still receive these updates however you will need to accept each update manually via the SYNC screen in your vehicle.

- The modem fitted to your vehicle will provide a cellular connection to the telecommunications network. The telecommunications network may be unavailable or interrupted from time to time and Ford is not responsible for any limitations or restrictions of the telecommunications network. The modem will only work with the 4G network and when the 4G network is no longer available, the modem will stop functioning and all data transmission from the modem will cease.
- Ford software updates rely on a cellular signal to begin the download process and can therefore only be downloaded when the modem fitted to vehicle is receiving a cellular signal.
- At Ford’s discretion, Ford may allow some software updates to be downloaded only when the modem fitted to the vehicle is receiving a cellular signal and the vehicle is also connected to a Wi-Fi network. Where Wi-Fi is used, you are responsible for internet access, including data costs.
- Ford may require a schedule to be set to allow installation of non-drivable updates.
- For each update, the customer accepts that there is a risk that the Ford software update may fail. In some instances, this may render the vehicle, or a vehicle part or module inoperable and technical support may be required.
- The time to download an update will depend on the size of the software update files, the speed of the cellular network or Wi-Fi network, the signal strength of the cellular network or Wi-Fi network and vehicle conditions (such as 12V battery state of charge).
- At Ford’s discretion, software updates may be made available to be downloaded by the vehicle for a limited period of time only. If the vehicle does not download the software update within that period of time, the software update may not subsequently be able to be delivered to the vehicle remotely via cellular connection or Wi-Fi
- Ford is under no obligation to provide any software updates and may in the future, at its discretion, offer optional paid services or updates.
