Access to Motor Vehicle Register Information

Ford Motor Company of New Zealand Limited

Ford Motor Company of New Zealand Limited (“Ford”, “we”, “us”, “our”) is registered as a Motor Vehicle Trader under the Motor Vehicle Sales Act 2003. As part of our vehicle trading activities, we are authorised to access certain personal information held on the Motor Vehicle Register (MVR), which is maintained by Waka Kotahi - NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi).

This statement explains what MVR information we may access, the authority under which we access it, when and why we use it, your privacy rights (including how to opt out), and how to raise a privacy concern or complaint.

1. What MVR information may we obtain?

Under our authorisation, we may obtain the names and addresses of persons who are currently registered in respect of a motor vehicle, provided that person has not instructed the Registrar of Motor Vehicles that they do not wish to have their name and address made available under section 241(1) of the Land Transport Act 1998.

2. Our authorisation to access this information

We are authorised to access this information under section 241 of the Land Transport Act 1998, pursuant to Gazette Notice 2022-au4073, issued by Waka Kotahi - NZ Transport Agency on 21 September 2022. This authorisation is granted to Ford as a Registered Motor Vehicle Trader and is valid from 1 November 2022 until 31 October 2027 (unless revoked earlier).

3. When and why we use this information

We will only access and use MVR information for the following specified purposes:

  • to confirm that a vendor is the registered person of a motor vehicle that Ford is proposing to purchase;
  • to assist in verifying that a change of registered person has been completed correctly for a transaction in which Ford is the purchaser or seller; and
  • where Ford acts as a Wholesaler and a motor vehicle is the subject of a safety recall listed on the safety recalls portal, to contact the registered person to advise them of any required actions relating to the vehicle's safe operation.

We will not access MVR information for any other purpose, and information obtained will not be disclosed to any third party unless necessary to achieve one of the purposes listed above. Names and addresses obtained from the MVR will not be retained for longer than is necessary to achieve that purpose.

4. Your privacy rights and opt-out options

If you are a registered person and do not wish your name and address to be made available to authorised users (including Ford) under section 241 of the Land Transport Act 1998, you may notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles directly. Further information on how to do this is available from Waka Kotahi - NZ Transport Agency at www.nzta.govt.nz.
